Welcome to the Website of the Caribbean American Nurses Association, Inc.

Overview

The Caribbean American Nurses Association (CANA), a 501© (3) not-for-profit, professional nursing organization, was founded in April 1979, by a group of registered nurses from the Caribbean residing in the New York City Area. The influx of nurses immigrating from the Caribbean in the late1960s and early 1970s, the challenges associated with the transition, and the potential hurdles of integrating into the American Health care system, prompted the foundation of the Caribbean American Nurses Association. The association was incorporated in October 1994.

The association comprises of highly skilled nursing leaders, educators, researchers and practitioners from various Caribbean islands as well as Central and South America including Antigua, Barbados, Belize, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Panama, St. Kitts/Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Today, the association is positioned as a medium for information sharing among Caribbean nurses on trends and issues affecting nursing and health care globally.
